The Eye-Popping Cover Art of the Brazilian Version of Stiff by Mary Roach

Gabriel Silveira Curiosidade Morbida Mary Roach cover

Gabriel Silveira is an illustrator working in São Paulo, Brazil. He was invited to illustrate the cover of Curiosidade Morbida, the Brazilian version of Stiff, by Mary Roach. The creative brief stated a simple request to relate to the theme of the book, without being morbid.

Gabriel ended up creating a rather lively illustration of a hand holding an eyeball. The vessels/nerves from the eyeball wrap around to the back cover to reveal the head. Brazilian artists know how to breath life and color into even the most morbid subjects! I have to say, I do love this cover more than the US version that features a photograph a pair of feet with a toe tag.

We are big fans of Mary Roach and her books. Definitely check them out if you haven't already, her writing will have you laughing no matter how gross or morbid. My personal favorites have been Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal and Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers!
