Le Cours d'Anatomie

There are times when I'm sent beautiful imagery accompanied by a raw story that stays with me and inspires me to notice the mundane things we often pass without thought.  Things like the eerie stillness of an anatomy lab after a class.  The way anatomical models are left and the composition they create in a large cold room.  Scientist, photographer, and illustrator, Jérémie Decalf, has recorded such occurrences, and his story follows below.

"My name is Jérémie, 28, French, and currently working as a scientist at the Instituto de Medicina Molecular in Lisbon for 2 years. Beside my work, I am passionate with illustration and photography and I just packed together a set of photos I have been taking the last 18 months.

The institute is located inside the hospital Santa Maria which has a MD training program. In the context of my daily work, I have the occasion to go through the corridor where the anatomy classes of 1st year students are taking place. I have been fascinated by the representation and models they use for these classes. They are quite detailed and interesting, but as the same time they have some kind of old-fashion charm and a real aesthetic that I wanted to capture. So for the last 18 months, while going where I keep my laboratory mice (which happens to be in the same corridor), I took my camera and made some shots on the way. Not moving anything, letting chance placing the organs, the chairs and tables."
