Dimitri Tsykalov
Dimitri Tsykalov is a Russian artist whose latest work is skulls sculpted from fruits, including watermelon and apples. In 2009 Tsykalov participated in the Fondation Frances show and on display was an empty wooden hospital room accompanied by large hanging organs made of "made of humus, roots and fine veins of wood." [topoLivres]Tsykalov does not only sculpt organs but also uses flesh as a medium. He took a series of photos with men wearing meat as helmet and shield, a man bound by linked sausages, and three men hoisting a triumphant flag. The men are otherwise nude, drawing more attention to the bright red flesh that surrounds them. It is simultaneously revolting and beautiful. The exposed flesh puts their vulnerability at the forefront.[via tdw]
