The incredibly fascinating Royal College of Surgeon’s Hunterian Museum in London has just opened an Olympic-themed exhibit in their Qvist Gallery, Anatomy of an Athlete: Elite sport, surgery and medical art.  The Hunterian called upon some of the top artists from the Medical Artists’ Association of Great Britain to create pieces that explore the anatomy and physiology of pro-athlete injuries in this summer’s 2012 London Olympics.

Pictured up top is our good friend Emily Evans of AnatomyUK standing in front of her piece, Hurdles, a triptych depicting a traumatic detachment of the hamstring from the ischial tuberosity.  Hurdlers are especially at risk for hamstring injuries, which are extremely painful!  Accompanying the triptych is a medical illustration of the surgical technique used to repair the injury.

View more work from the exhibition via the BBC and if you’re in London make sure and stop by!

Don’t forget, we also have prints by the wonderfully talented Emily Evans in the Street Anatomy store.  Memento Mori Catrina (top) and Know Thyself (bottom) are available for $50. A3 11.7″ x 16.5″ Giclee prints on Canson Aquarelle rag paper.

Well, artist extraordinaire, James Jean, is at it again. Here is a character lineup for a secret project called SOMA that he has in the works. No info about the project is out yet, but the illustrations are amazing, definitely click for a larger view. My favorite, of course, is The Blood.

The Hambuster

Hambuster from Hambuster Team on Vimeo.

You may like having a good lunch in a quiet place as a park… But what if your lunch doesn’t? In the street everyone can hear you scream, but honestly who cares?

Hambuster is a graduation movie co-directed by five students from Supinfocom Arles. ?This production is a 6 min short film and it was all done in 3D stereoscopic.

I can’t believe this is a student project!  Apart from the awesome visuals, there’s some wonderfully rendered anatomy in there.

Mortal Kombat X-Ray Attack

While other girls were playing with stupid Barbies, I remember the days of playing Mortal Kombat on my handheld Sega and the rush I’d get from pressing the right combination of buttons just-at-the-right-time in order to crush my opponent with the beloved finishing move.  My man was Jaxx.

Now, Mortal Kombat has added the ULTIMATE finishing move, the X-Ray Attack.  Watch the video for all the gory details.

If Horses Could Speak

You may remember my post from some time ago called ‘Horses Inside Out’.
Well, here is a video using a similar strategy to show how training techniques may affect the horse’s physiology.
