Street Anatomy’s new nerdy sister-site: Think Anatomy

I’d like to introduce the official launch of Think Anatomy (thinkanatomy.com)—links to the best human anatomy study aids on the Internet.

I’ve taken links to the best anatomy resources on the Internet, categorized them, reviewed them, and put them all in one place—Think Anatomy.  This has been a lengthy side project of mine and was inspired by my own experience taking gross human anatomy.

I found that reading an anatomy textbook, sitting in lecture, and dissecting in lab weren’t enough to really master anatomy.  So I turned to the Internet to find resources like dissection videos, interactives, games, quizzes, etc., to supplement my study material.  It took a lot of time to sift through the results and put together a list of valuable online anatomy resources. That’s where the inspiration to make Think Anatomy started.  I wanted to make a site that anatomy students could use to find study aids without having to use a major search engine like Google.  So after many many hours spent searching, reviewing, and categorizing anatomy sites, Think Anatomy is finally ready.

Go ahead and take a look through Think Anatomy. And if you’re an anatomy student I hope you can find the site useful.  Feel free to rank and review any of the sites or submit your own favorite anatomy site—I know I haven’t covered every single anatomy site out there!  The goal is to make Think Anatomy the number one portal to anatomy study aids on the Internet.

Here’s a sample of the type of sites you’ll find on Think Anatomy:

Anatomy Arcade—makes basic human anatomy come alive through awesome free Flash games and interactives.
Visible Body—the most comprehensive human anatomy visualization tool available today.
University of Michigan Dissection Videos—he best collection of free dissection videos on the web.

The Anatomy in Art Spotter

Heather TompkinsI’d like to introduce Heather Tompkins as the first official contributor to Street Anatomy!  For the past few months Heather has been routinely sending me links to images containing anatomy in art and design.

Her excellent eye for spotting good illustration and design is just one of the reasons I asked her to start writing posts for Street Anatomy.  Heather is also an extremely talented illustrator and filmmaker who’s done her own anatomical work including illustrating an anatomical heart tattoo for a friend.

She IS what Street Anatomy is all about.

Her fascination with anatomy began at the age of 3 with a love for skeletons.

I wrote a story book as a kid about my skeleton friend and myself solving crimes or something Scooby Doo. I can’t remember what happened, but my mom never fails to point out my love of skeletons, she still buys me skeleton themed stuff for fun sometimes. So anatomy was an early thing for me I guess. I never had the desire to study it, but I’ve always loved the look and archaic feel of anatomical art, something raw and exposed about it, and I love its intricacy. And I also have a massive obsession with hearts, real ones. It’s all very dark and romantic and unexplainable really, think Frankenstein.

Heather is currently freelancing in and around San Francisco.

Take a look through her portfolio here and also check out her anatomy related work below.

Updates

I apologize for the down time of Street Anatomy yesterday.  Apparently I have outgrown my webhost!  I’m in the process of switching over to a new host so please bear with me for the next couple of weeks.  There are lots of plan in the works for expanding Street Anatomy even more, so stay tuned!

Updates

Hello everyone! I apologize for the lack of posts recently. Street Anatomy needed a summer face-lift, so I’ve been toiling away trying to update the design. I finally reached a point of satisfaction…for now. The header still needs to be updated as well. Hopefully I’ll get to that in the near future.

And just for fun, check out this website that uses Flash and 3D to create an amazing interactive experience, Ecodazoo.com. (Not anatomy related, but still great).

20/20 Investigates Plastinated Bodies

Bodyworlds Javelin Thrower

Asking people what they think about Body Worlds is like arguing over religion. There are those that are adamantly against it stating that it’s immoral, disrespectful and exploitative. And there are those who think that it’s educational, artistic and enlightening. Either way it has become one of the most controversial exhibits of our time. And we all know controversy sells.

Tonight on ABC, 20/20’s Brian Ross presents “Human Bodies on Display: Where do they come from?”

A three-month “20/20″ investigation into the business of bodies tracked the ghoulish process to its origins — from a body processing factory on the German-Polish border, to Internet sites that offer the plasticized bodies for sale, to a rundown warehouse in northern China where “20/20’s” undercover cameras saw what has, until now, been kept well hidden.

This is supposed to be one of the best investigations put out by 20/20 in a while, so don’t miss it!

Catch it tonight (Friday) on ABC at 10pm E.T.
