Anatomic Fashion Friday: Ransom City

Here is a stellar shirt design from Nossa, the shirt explanations is as follows: ”Kidnapping for ransom is big business in Brazil. In Sao Paulo, someone is kidnapped every three days on average.” That is a very scary thought, to say the least.
The black shirt is printed with phosphorus based ink that glows under a black-light, so you don’t get lost in the club.

Very bad taste. Two observations: 1) the data is wrong. Unfortunately, it’s worse. Actually 3 people are kidnapped (for ramson) per day in S?£o Paulo on average (never happened neither to me nor to my family or friends, by the way). 2) What are these guys suggesting by using that Arabic-like font? I think this might be quite ofensive for Arabic speaking people.
True, i guess they didn’t bother researching the most current trends when describing their shirt. And coming from a middle east background myself, i personally didn’t find it offensive, but i could see where someone might. I didn’t read it as being derogatory necessarily, at least the explantation isn’t printed on the shirt itself. The skull design however still holds its own i think, regardless of the social messages the designers were or weren’t trying to promote.
Thanks for your kind reply, Heather. Yes, the skull is great. But I think the main problem was to associate the message with a specific city and sell it worldwide; it could be somewhere in Colombia or in South Africa, for instance, where there is the Farc and the highest rape rates in the world, respectively - and lovely places with lovely people to visit, by the way. I think the only people in S?£o Paulo who would be proud of wearing such shirts are the criminals themselves. I hope you understand my point, and also my discomfort when I (and possibly others from here) read the title of your post (the ramson city). Believe me, this will not influence my great appreciation for this blog. I just think this kind of feedback may be useful. Hope the guys from “Nossa” could read us.
Ransom City, like most of the post titles on this blog, is the name given to the product by the company or artist, in this case, the name of this shirt. Not meaning to be offensive to anyone reading of course. And feedback is always appreciated. Its good to know things like this, and art in general, are being discussed. So critique away!
