About Vanessa Ruiz

This site is designed and maintained by me, Vanessa Ruiz. I live 5 minutes from the hustle of downtown Chicago in the artsy neighborhood of Pilsen. I’m currently a graduate student in Biomedical Visualization at the University of Illinois at Chicago, perfecting my skills in medical illustration, animation, graphic design, and much more.

Background

I received my B.A. in Biology from the sunny University of San Diego. My evolution into a career in medical illustration began back in the day with an aspiration to become a cartoonist.

This evolved into an interest in scientific illustration in college where for four years I drew illustrations of the morphology of the pelagic tuna crab. I can’t tell you how many hours I spent straining my eyes stippling crabs.

My love for human anatomy eventually steered me towards medical illustration, a field that I had never heard of and apparently not many other people did either. So, here I am today, becoming a medical illustrator and educating people about our profession through my blog, Street Anatomy.

Other interests include, street art, cycling, advertising, photography, British history, marine biology, learning new hotkeys, and applying Web 2.0 to medicine and education.
