If Jesus Had Been…

If Jesus Had Been an Abortion How Happy We Would Be 15 x 7 x 4cm

From the man who brought us Morgue Chocolate, Stephen Shanabrook creates one of the most controversial pieces I’ve seen in a long time—a tiny gold plated cast bronze statue of an illegally aborted fetus from the 1960s. And if that alone isn’t controversial enough, the title of the piece, “If Jesus Had Been an Abortion How Happy We Would Be” probably already made half of you close your browser and go pray.

Stephen has managed to combine two of the most controversial subjects human beings can talk about today in one piece of art—religion and abortion—there’s no winning both even though we all think we’re right.

This piece is part of Stephen’s solo show in London called “In Pills We Trust” at the Orel Art UK Gallery, 7 Howick Place, London SW1P 1BB till March 13th.

Sorry, but this is just another example of an artist using shock value to get attention. “Controversy” and “meaningful artwork” are not interchangeable terms. :/

It’s nice to read your blog again, even if you did subject me to this freaky phenomenon.

Yeah, the piece is cool, but the title is a total cop-out. I’d like to have seen the aborted Jesus concept executed more subtly so that it spoke for itself…
